Our Values

  • We will nurture a people who passionately love God.  Jesus made it clear that the first and greatest commandment in scripture is to love God with all your heart. (Deuteronomy 6:5, Matthew 22:37) We want to inspire and move people toward a life that is lived in loving relationship with a loving God. Loving God is at the center of everything we do.

  • We will be an authentic community of people. Jesus made it clear that He was not a safe haven from the world, but a place of refuge for the world. (Matthew 9:10-13) At Current, we aren’t a church for people who “have it all together.” We’ve all made mistakes, and we are all a work in progress; because of that, we will not judge anyone based on past experiences or behavior. There is no need to pretend that we are better or worse than we really are; but as we accept each other and speak the truth in love to one another, we can help each other grow into who God wants us to be. (Romans 12:3, Ephesians 4:11-16, 25-26) Questions? Doubts? Hurts? Hang-ups? Bring it!

  • We will genuinely love people. Jesus said that after the first and greatest commandment, the second most important thing is to love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew 22:37) Because we’re convinced that church should be centered on real, loving relationships, we believe that we can’t be an authentic community if we don’t truly love one another. We believe that the greatest way to learn to love best is done within the context of small groups, where people do life together (Hebrews 10:24-25, Luke 6:12-13, Acts 2:44-46). In these life groups, we are to be the church to one another, demonstrate God’s heart to a world that is watching, and live out the “one another’s” of scripture together. At Current, we are committed to the value of everyone being cared for in a community of love where we are encouraged to grow together.

  • We will worship God with our best. God is worthy of our best and highest worship, not our leftovers. And because there is nothing boring about being a Christian, our worship should reflect that. But giving God our best isn’t about showy performances or the people leading, it’s about our heart. (John 4:23-24) Our worship will honor and magnify God, call us to develop Christ-like character, and strengthen our lives so that we may serve Him in this world. Yet in all we do, as we endeavor to be a spiritually alive community, we will strive for excellence.

  • We will be culturally current in our communication: We believe it’s important to speak the language of our culture while not compromising Biblical truth. (II Corinthians 5:14-21, I Corinthians 9:19-23). We use the arts, music, video, multimedia, drama, poetry, dance and any other medium to portray who God is and His love for people.

  • We will unashamedly share the love of Jesus in word and deed. We believe that God calls us to care for the area in which He has placed us. Because we come in contact with people everyday who are in need, we believe that next to loving Jesus and growing in Him, one of the main responsibilities of Current will be to care for and serve the poor, the oppressed, and the marginalized in our community and beyond. We will always look for opportunities to show and be the heart and hands of Jesus in our neighborhood, workplace, and world. (Deut. 10:17-19, Deut. 15:7-11, Prov. 19:17, Micah 6:8, I John 3:17, Matthew 25)

  • We will create a multiplication movement of churches in Lakewood Ranch and beyond. At the heart of who we are as a church is the belief that the most effective way of spreading the Gospel is through churches starting churches. Studies show that the older and larger a church is, the less likely that church is to lead someone to Christ. Why? Because larger, more established churches are more likely to attract people who are already churched and who like a church with the biggest sanctuary and best programs. That’s not to say that won’t happen at Current; but it’s not our focus. Our desire is that every 5 years (at minimum), we will send out a core group of people whom we have trained and prepared to start a new multiplying church somewhere else.
